About Prilosec

Prilosec was approved by the FDA in 1988, and is used primarily in the treatment of heartburn.[5] It is available as both a prescription and an OTC medication. The main difference in the two is that presciption Prilosec is also used to treat esophagitis, GERD, and ulcers. Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor.[6]

Proton pump inhibitors can, in some cases, make users more likely to get fractures in their wrists, spine, or hips. This usually happens with extended use (a year or more) or high dosages. Older patients are more likely to be affected.[7]
