About Election Day

Election Day in the United States is held each year on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. This date was selected in 1845, and is the date when most polls open for the election of public officials. Some states also open the polls for early voting a week or two in advance of election day, and voters who will be away from home on Election Day can apply for an absentee ballot. Regardless of when the votes are cast, all votes are not tabulated until Election Day.
